Abstract

The study investigated the Science teachers’ awareness of the 5E’s instructional model and students learning styles in some selected secondary schools in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study and a sample of 80 Science Teachers from 20 secondary schools in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area was selected using the simple random sampling technique. A researcher-structured questionnaire titled “5Es Instructional Model and Students’ Learning Style Questionnaire” was employed for data collection. Data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation. The findings from the study showed that Science Teachers’ awareness level on the use of 5E’s instructional model was very high, Science teachers employed 5Es instructional strategy for the delivery of their instructions to a great extent and their learning styles did not affect their learning during the teaching-learning process. Based on the findings, it was recommended that Science teachers in secondary schools should be encouraged to deploy participatory instructional strategies such as the 5Es for the delivery of their instructions. Also, the government, Non-Governmental Organizations and other educational stakeholders should organize seminars and workshops to update science teachers’ competency on innovative and learner-centered teaching approaches.
