Teachers’ Perception of the Effect of School Feeding Programme on Academic Performance of Rural Children in Odeda Local Government, Ogun State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study examined the perceived effect of school feeding programme on academic performance of rural children in Odeda Local Government area of Ogun State. The study obtained data on the socioeconomic characteristics of the respondents, the perceived effect of feeding on both the enrolment and academic performance of pupils from 36 teachers using purposive sampling technique through the use of questionnaire. Data were analyzed using percentage, frequency counts and mean. Results showed that 63.9% of the respondents were male with mean age of 39.53 years while 38.9% had National Certificate in Education as the highest qualification. The result further showed that 55.6% had positive perception on school feeding towards pupils’ enrolment while 72.2% had positive perception of the effect of the feeding programme on pupils’ academic performance. The study concluded that school feeding programme is perceived to have improved the academic performance of pupils in rural areas, and hence recommended that effort should be made at extending it to secondary schools.
