Evaluation of Radiation Safety Awareness Among Mobile Phone Users in University of Port Harcourt

Abstract

The goal of the study was to evaluate radiation safety awareness among mobile phone users at the University of Port Harcourt in Rivers State. It adopted a descriptive study design and a simple random sampling technique was utilized select a sample 341 respondents from a population of 2312. The instrument used in data collection is Evaluating Radiation Safety Awareness of Mobile Phones Users Questionnaire, with a reliability of 0.82 obtained using Cronbach Alpha reliability formula. Three research questions and one hypothesis guided the study. The research questions were answered using the criterion mean of 2.5 and standard deviation, while the z-test was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that students have a good degree of understanding regarding radiation safety. The students agreed that mobile phone radiation is dangerous; nevertheless, there are variances in radiation safety awareness between male and female students at the University of Port Harcourt. Based on the findings, it was recommended amongst others that students should get in-service training on safe use of mobile phones, and specific orientation programs for newly enrolled students should be implemented. Greater awareness of the detrimental impact of cellphone radiation on students’ health should be emphasized among school authorities and instructors.
