The Role of Mother Tongue Education in the Achievement of Sustainable Development Goals in Nigeria

Abstract

This paper examines the role of mother tongue education at the basic level of schooling in Nigeria towards the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal No 4 in Nigeria. It noted that the success recorded with the Ife primary project demonstrates that many more Nigerian languages can be used at the basic school level. Instruction in the mother tongue is the fastest means to eradicate illiteracy, therefore it will help the child to understand concepts easily and imbibe cultural values. The paper suggests that maximum benefit of mother tongue education will accrue to the nation when experts in many more language areas are engaged to develop standardized curriculum materials. It further suggests increased readiness in terms of extensive teacher education in more indigenous languages, availability and distribution of teachers and materials to areas of need. The three tiers of government, stakeholders, parents and communities should contribute financially to mother tongue education for optimum benefit for sustainable development in Nigeria.
