Abstract

The study investigated the effect of simulated instructional package on learning transfer in Electrical Installation and Maintenance Works in Government Craft Development Centres in Rivers State. The study adopted a pretest posttest non randomized control group quasi-experimental research design with a population of 170 PREVOC 3 Electrical Installation and Maintenance Works students of four Government Craft Development Centres in Rivers State. The sample for the study was a total of 58 PREVOC 3 which comprised two intact classes of two Government Craft Development Centres selected randomly. The instrument for data collection was an Electrical Wiring Performance Scale (EWPS). It was subjected to face and content validity by three experts and with reliability coefficient of 0.83 obtained through test-retest method. The experimental group was exposed to instruction through the computer simulated instructional package while the control group was exposed to instruction through the conventional method. The both groups were pretested before treatment and post-tested after treatment. Data gathered were analysed using mean for the research questions and analysis of covariance for the hypotheses. The result showed that students exposed to instruction via the computer simulated instructional package had higher mean score on learning transfer than their counterparts exposed to instruction through the lecture method. The result however showed that the difference in learning transfer in lighting circuit installation and power circuit installation was not statistically significant. Based on the result, it was recommended that the computer simulated instructional package should be used as complementary tool for teaching electrical installation among students of Electrical Installation and Maintenance Works in Government Craft Development Centres in Rivers State.
