Perception of Educators toward Guidance and Counseling in Addressing the Challenges of Anxiety and Depression among Adolescent in Public Secondary Schools in Delta State

Abstract

The study examined the perception of educators toward Guidance and Counseling in addressing the challenges of anxiety and depression among adolescent in public secondary schools in Delta State. This study is a survey adopting the ex-post-facto research design.  Three research questions were raised in the study. The population for this study comprised 15356 public secondary school principals and teachers in Delta State. The sample for this study was 1520 and it is made up of (100) principals and (1420) teachers in Delta State public secondary schools selected from 12 Local Government Areas. A self developed questionnaire titled “Role of Guidance and Counseling in Addressing the Challenges of Anxiety and Depression among Adolescent Questionnaire (RGCACADAQ)”. The instrument was structured in a 4-point Likert-type scale and was employed and its reliability equally determined via a pilot study using test re-test reliability technique with a coefficient index of 0.96 and factorial vali was used. The research questions raised were answered using simple percentage, mean score and standard deviation for the study.. It therefore recommended that the government and policy maker should integrate guidance and counselling services into school curriculum. Train teachers and counsellors in mental health awareness and intervention. Establish school-based mental health teams. Promote parents-teacher counsellor collaboration
