Influence of Birth Control Measures on Population Control among Women in Bonny and Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Areas in Rivers State

Abstract

The study “examines the influence of birth control measures on population control among women in Bonny and Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Areas of Rivers State. Two objectives, two research questions and two corresponding hypotheses guided the study. A descriptive survey design was adopted in the study. A purposive sampling technique was used to obtain a sample of 704 out of 6123 women in Bonny and Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Areas of Rivers State. The instrument for data collection was a self-constructed questionnaire The instrument was validated by experts and tested for reliability using test-retest reliability method. Using Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation (PPMC), a reliability coefficient of 0.79 was obtained. The research questions were answered using mean and standard deviation while the hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance using z-test. The results of the study showed that, to a very high extent, knowledge of birth control measures and various types of birth control measures adopted influenced population control. Based on the findings of the study, the study recommended that, the government should create laws that will expand birth” control options and programmes to include couple-focused services through the national, state, and municipal assemblies.
