Capacity Building for Stakeholders:

A Community Mobilization Strategy for Implementation of Community Development Projects in South-East Nigeria

Abstract

This study investigated the extent to which capacity building for stakeholders is utilised as community mobilisation strategy in the implementation of community development projects in South East States of Nigeria. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study with a population of 1747 comprising 895 community development officers and 852 executive members of town union in all the 95 local government areas in the five states. The stratified random sampling technique was employed to draw the sample size of 1073 from 60 local government areas. Researchers’ structured questionnaire was the data collecting instrument, faced-validated by three validates with the reliability coefficient value of .85 obtained using Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The research question was answered using the mean and standard deviation, while the hypothesis was tested at .05 level of significance using the independent t-test statistic. Findings among others revealed that to a moderate extent, capacity building was utilised in the implementation of community development projects in South East states of Nigeria. Some recommendations were given among which was that the state governments should make effort to effectively strengthen community’ s ownership of development projects in rural and urban areas.
